A fresh, new start

Just imagine; you walk into any club in Victoria and see rows and rows of fresh, new, matching chess sets. Looks great doesn’t it?

Then you sit down to play, and as you make the first move you wonder if there is cryptonite somewhere nearby draining your strength. You hear gasps from everyone in the room…they are all being affected…it must be a trap set by the evil bridge players?!

No. It isn’t that your strength has been sapped; all of the chess sets are now double-weighted! Wow, as you play the game you feel like a stronger player…after all they wouldn’t waste such nice pieces on a patzer!

Wow, I’ve written a letter which I want to post to all the chess clubs in Victoria. Does anyone have any idea how hard it is to find the contact details of chess clubs?

This has to be the first thing to fix. Every club needs a website with BIG BOLD CONTACT DETAILS - including phone, email, venue and postal address.

This is insane.

I wish I could find the 1982 VCA Handbook, it was sitting on my desk not that long ago. Anyway back in those days Frank Meerbach was President and as I flicked through the pages I noticed the club directory. This is why I wish I could find it…I’d like to count how many clubs there were. It was about 5 pages full…

My radical idea

Chess Victoria needs a direct membership system. There is no doubt about it.

At the moment if CV wants to communicate with the “chess players of Victoria” they have to tell the club presidents and get them to pass the message on.

This is the fundamental problem with CV as it is today….they are delegating EVERYTHING to the clubs to do. This is completely backwards from what should be happening. The CLUBS are the customers! CV should be SERVING the clubs; not the other way around.

Why isn’t this Elite thing a Chess Victoria initiative?

If you’ve been reading my previous posts you’ll pick up straight away how it all works together … clubs obviously need new members, and a lot of that new membership has to come from junior players.

Take a look at the Player Pathway created by Chess Kids and tell me; where does your CLUB fit into this picture?

Does Tasmania really need a State Chess Association?

With only 3 chess clubs it seems perhaps a little bit of administrative overkill. There are plenty of associations who amalgamate Tasmania and Victoria to save time, money and hassle.

I wonder what Kevin Bonham thinks of the idea?

Do we really want chess sponsorship?

What would you do with $500,000 in sponsorship. Would it really solve all our problems?

Or would it just allow us to spend $500,000 and then end up backĀ  in the same position we’re in now!

A chess centre

Councils, State Government and Federal Government spend billions on infrastructure/venues for local football, cricket, basketball, swimming and other sports clubs.

How hard do you think it would be to get someone to donate a space as the Victorian Chess Centre?
